Mirror Repair
Most people have a mirror in their home that has lost the silver around the edges. This is caused by constant exposure to moisture. That silver one the mirror is the material adhered to the back that make the mirror reflective, when that silver becomes damaged or begins to peal around the edge the mirror begins to turn black.
Instead of throwing out your mirror why not create a wood frame that will cover those unsightly edges without the waste of a perfectly good mirror. Whether the mirror is a full length mirror, wall mirror, vanity mirror, or bathroom mirrors they can usually be saved from the dumpster. Measure the damage around the outer edge of the mirror, so that you will know how much wood you will need to cover the damage. Then head to your home improvement store.
There is a variety of types of wood and colors you can choose to repair mirrors. Wood molding comes in a variety of wood types and can create a different look in any room. Make sure to take into consideration your homes decor when choosing the wood molding for your frame. While at the home improvement store you will need to pick up glue to adhere the wood molding to your mirror. The best kind to purchase is marine glue because it is good in moist environments, this is especially good when you are repairing bathroom mirrors.
Preparing the molding includes cutting it to the proper lenghts to fit the perimeter of the mirror. Use a pencil to mark where the brackets will fit into the molding, you can cut those spots witha jigsaw then sand till smooth. Before you glue the molding to the mirror, sand it and apply the marine varnish or any paint application you desire. This will seal the wood and keep the moisture out. Then simply apply the marine glue to the back of the wood molding and adhere to the mirror. Make sure that you are covering the damaged portion of the mirror. Use a clamp to hold each piece in place until the glue is settled and completely dry.
Once all the pieces are tightly adhered and dry on the mirror, simply hang it in the desired spot and enjoy your brand new mirror. Whether its a simple mirror repair or a complete remodel of an old mirror, you can achieve any look you desire to create a new look for your home. Creating a wood frame mirror for your home will not only give you a new look it will also be great for the environment by cutting down unnecessary waste.
