Irrigation Systems

irrigation systemIrrigation is a popular and water efficient method for watering your garden, farm, lawn, or any other outdoor living organism that requires sufficient water to survive. The practice began as early as the 6th millennium, and has continued to be used for efficient watering purposes. The history of irrigation is fascinating, and something was obviously done right to keep the concept around for so long. Irrigation is one of the easiest ways to be eco-conscious and conserve water. The first step to installing and using a water irrigation system is to discover what kind of system you would be interested in using.

Surface irrigation is an irrigation method that involves flooding the land. Prior to the “flooding” the land is dug up and plants are planted in a way that makes this efficient. Gravity takes effect here, and pulls the water to areas where it is needed most. While it looks as if this method wastes water, it actually conserves a large amount. This is most commonly used in gardens and farms. It’s a known fact that using irrigation methods such as this one can save you hundreds of gallons on your home garden, and thousands of gallons on a large scale farm.

Drip irrigation is a bit more difficult to pull off, but is easily the most efficient and eco-friendly method for watering anything. Water is delivered directly to the root source, drop by tiny drop. It sounds slow and painful, but while watering through a hose a good deal of water is wasted and ends up as run off. Drip irrigation allows your plants to get what they actually need directly, nothing is wasted.

Countless other irrigation systems also exist, and have more intricate and detailed rules for using each system. Most are simple to follow, but some require either heavy labor, or animal power. Other methods for irrigation can only be used in certain climates. Whatever the case, all irrigation systems are beneficial, practically free to use, and result in a healthier and greener garden or farm. Using these methods can actually save you a lot more money than you would think while protecting the environment.
