How To Make Your Own Laundry Detergent
Given the economic setbacks that most countries experience recently, people are looking for more ways on how to cut down their expenses. Today, people are becoming more creative in trimming down their expenses. This cutting down of expenses can be manifested by some simple measures done at home. Reducing the costs on home supplies could also contribute on the domestic austerity measures that your family can impose. Producing your own cleaning supplies can really help a lot. This includes making your own laundry detergent.
Since all homes need laundry detergent in washing clothes, making your own could really mean a significant reduction to your expenses at home. And what’s more interesting is that making your own laundry detergent is so easy.
In doing so, you need to prepare the following first:
-1 bar of soap, depending on your preference
-1 cup of washing soda
-1/2 cup of borax
-around three gallons of water
-container, preferably a bucket with a lid
-knife
-spoon for mixing
-measuring cup
Meanwhile, below are the steps in making your own laundry detergent:
1. In a pan, boil four cups of water on high heat. While you are still waiting for the water to boil, shave strips of the prepared bar soap using a knife. Put the strips of bar soap into the water. Stir the mixture until the strips of soap are completely dissolved.
2. Pour three gallons of hot water into the container you have prepared. Then, pour into the container the soapy water you have boiled in the first step. Stir, then add a cup of washing soda. The mixture needs constant stirring. After a minute or two, add the borax into the mixture. Stir for some more minutes then leave it overnight.
3. The next morning, check the soap mixture, and you should see a gelatinous slime inside the container you left the night before. You can now use this for your laundry loads! You are assured that this laundry detergent can clean your clothes like the ordinary commercial laundry detergent you often buy from grocery stores. The main difference perhaps is the price you need to pay.
Adding scent to the home-made laundry detergent is optional. You can also do that if you want. But the most important thing here is that you can save some bucks in preparing your own, rather than buying laundry detergents from grocery stores. The estimated savings that you can have in producing your own laundry detergent is between $50 and $60—a significant amount that you can allocate to your other needs.
