How To Fix Cracks In Drywall
One of the things that can happen to your walls over time are the evidence of cracks. This can occur from a settling foundation, or stress on a wall from everyday wear and tear. So now you are at a point where you want to fix he cracks in your drywall. We will cover all the steps with you.
The first thing you will want to do is clean out the drywall crack. So take a utility knife and cut another spot a little to the left or right of the existing crack. Doing so at an angle. This should cause your crack to now become a small groove that is open and fillable.
After cleaning out the groove, you will want to make sure that there is no serious movement in the wall which may be the reason for the crack in the first place. If you do feel that there is some play in the drywall, then you will want to get some drywall nails and hammer down the spots around the crack.
Next you will want to make sure you have picked up some all purpose joint compound and paper drywall tape. This is going to be the easiest way for you to clean and cover up the area. So you will want to mix the all purpose mud you have purchased, and make sure that it is like pudding when you are ready to apply it.
The first thing you will want to do to apply the mud is to have a drywall pan as well as a 6″ knife for spreading the compound to the wall. Spread a nice even bed across the cracked area making sure to get full coverage. Next apply the tape to the joint with the crease facing down. After it is firmly in place then take an 8 inch drywall knife and start from the middle of the tape and wiping up to remove excess mud and smooth it out. Then do the same starting in the middle again and going down remove the excess. Make sure that the mud oozes a little when pressing harder on the area. This will ensure there are no air bubbles.
Let the area sit for several hours until it is fully dry before adding primer and paint. Hopefully that crack will be gone for good if you have done it properly.
