The first thing you want to do is get a rust removing agent or solution. These can be purchased at any hardware store or even Walmart for very little. Just to make sure  the solution does not damage the mailbox, turn it upside down and add a small amount to a rusted area.

Next you will want to dissasemble the mailbox and add the parts you can into a bowl or bucket with the solution. Let them soak there for a while. be sure to look at the instructions to see how long the rust remover takes to begin working when soaking things.

Next take a brush and begin scrubbing the areas where rust reidue are visible. if you need to use a wire brush be careful that you don’t over do it and tear a hole brushing areas that are weak.

Take some fresh water and rinse the areas that you have cleaned and repeat the process of removal  if there is any rust left. Once rinsed and dry, it might not be such a bad idea to add a rust protectant to the  whole mailbox after assembling it back together.

The removal of rust from your mailbox may take some time, but it may also save you some money so you don’t have to replace it this time around.
