Finding A Good Remodeling Contractor
When remodeling your home, the first thing you are likely to do is find a remodeling contractor. This can be a tedious process and requires a good amount of patience and dedication to getting exactly what you want. You have to be able to trust the people you hire with your home, and hope that they do a good job. Of course, there isn’t a need to necessarily worry about scam artists. Many cities and states have specific laws that protect you in the event that someone pulls a fast one. It is just important to know those laws prior to hiring anyone.
After you know your laws and how you are protected, you can begin looking for a remodeling contractor within your general area. Call up a builders association to find out who is a member, and get references from various sources. References go a long way when choosing a contractor, especially if you get them before asking a contractor for one.
If you are looking to save money and know of someone in your area that does freelance remodeling work, consider hiring them. Just be prepared with a contract and ready to negotiate deals. This can be a risky route to take, but many freelance contractors are just talented individuals waiting to get a shot. You may end up with a remodeling job far superior to what you would have expected!
It’s also important that the remodeling contractor can get a vision for what you have in mind. They are an artist as well, and should be able to communicate and see what you want done. Rushed, overly enthusiastic and hard to reach contractors are a bad sign. Avoid them at all costs to save yourself a lot of money and repairs.
Finding a good remodeling contractor is about more than dialing a number and hiring the first person you can. You should be able to do a thorough interview session, communicate freely, and know exactly what you are getting into. This takes time, and you should be prepared to make a lot of calls and preparations. In the end, the finished result will be worth all of the time spent.

I would add these as well
- Ask at least three builders to provide quotes.
- Decide, to the last detail, what you want to be done and make sure the builders’ estimates cover everything you would like to be done.
- Try not to change your mind during the job as it can add to costs, but if you do, make sure all changes are agreed in writing.
- Be realistic – Builders aren’t mind readers, so if your project is not going to plan you must spell it out and explain what you do want.
- Talk to the builder’s previous customers.
- Go and see the jobs the company has done and ask the customer if it all went well.
- Ask for details of how the builder should be paid. This should be in installments, as parts of the project are completed.
