Whether you use your dishwasher all the time, or just once a month, the chances are, at some point it will need cleaning. To safely dismantle a dishwasher follow the steps below. If you are unsure of any points always ask a friend or relative if you can.

• You need to start by disconnecting your dishwasher from the mains, or if is directly connected, cut it off directly from your circuit breaker. If you do not disconnect it not only is there a large danger of electrocution, but you also run the risk of damaging the dishwasher.

• Take the bottom storage rack out of your dishwasher. Some people like to take out the top rack as well to give them extra space to work in, but it is not needed to clean the dishwasher.

• Usually the spray arm will be screwed on. If it is screwed on then unscrew it and it should promptly come out of place. If it is not screwed on, push it gently from side to side until it becomes loose. If it has no screws and pushing it from side to side does not appear to work, read your dishwasher manual rather than trying to force it, as you may end up breaking it.

• Carefully remove the screen from below the spray arm. Removing this will grant you access into the main drainage system of the dishwasher.

• Locate the pump housing, and remove this. This can be held on by many things, but it is usually screwed on so just use your screwdriver again to unscrew that. If there are no screws again consult your dishwasher manual or call the manufacturer to find out the exact details.

• Remove all the internal parts you can see, including the upper impeller alongside with the food dispenser blade like piece. Anything else which can be taken out would be beneficial. Once you have taken all the parts out, prepare a solution in your sink, made from warm water and a little washing detergent. Leave them all to soak and then rinse the parts off. After taking them out of the solution and drying them, examine the parts for any old or worn parts. If you see any, try and get them replaced as soon as possible, as they could be affecting the cleaning performance by the dishwasher.

• Rinse all the parts in cold water and dry them. Replace all the parts back into the machine, taking care to make sure you screw all the parts back firmly in to place.

If you notice a rattling noise after the cleaning, open the dishwasher back up and check that everything is screwed in correctly.

• First of all you need to think through all the logistics. Be careful, you need to stay exactly on the line. Take your time when using the saw and don’t rush it, or you could cause yourself problems later on. Once you have drilled all the way around the surface many fall through. If it doesn’t simply push it out. You now have your sink space ready.

• Put the sink upside down, and install the sink faucet (tap) as well as the sink strainers. It is much better to do this whilst the sink is out in the open as you have a lot more access to put the parts into place. Proceed to line the lip on the underside of the sink with plumbers putty to create a watertight seal for when the sink is in place.

• Take great care, and flip the sink over and place it into the hole you made earlier. The sink should fit straight into place; if not then you may need to drill the hole a tiny bit bigger. Be careful when lifting the sink, and if possible try and get someone else to help you with the burden.

The sink should come with mounting clips that keep the sink in place. Fit these whilst following the manufacturer’s instructions and your sink will now be firmly in place. Now all you need to do is simply connect the P trap, which carries the water to the faucet from the pipes. Run the water for a few minutes to check all is working, and take a step back and admire your handy work, you have no installed your very own sink!
