Energy Saving Washing Machines
Saving energy is equally important as saving water, but what many people don’t know is that water consumption equals energy consumption. Washing machines are one of the most energy sucking appliances in your home, and tend to waste hundreds of gallons per year! So how do you know if your washing machine is energy star approved and water saving?
First step would be to see whether it is a front loading machine, or top loading. Front loading washing machines are more efficient as a rule, because you can get more done with less. Using less each time you wash or use a washer, means less energy to heat your water and less energy to use the machine. Even if a front loading machine costs more, it will save you much more than a cheaper machine over the course of its life.
Technology is continuously making it easier to choose an energy efficient washing machine. Some newer washing machines on the market have special sensors to determine how much water your load of laundry needs. This allows it to fill only to the point that it needs, and no more or less. Most people use 20 gallons more than they really need per load, but a sensor identifying machine doesn’t waste anything. Even better than a machine with sensors, is a front loading washing machine with sensors!
Any machine older than 5 years is also likely to waste water and be less efficient. Most machines that are newer are energy star washing machines and use up to 50% less water and energy than comparable models. This is a considerable amount of savings over the course of a year, especially since the average family of four does at least 5 loads a week!
Energy saving washing machines may cost more than a regular bottom of the line machine, but the benefits they provide are extremely superior to anything you have ever used. Energy efficient washers are designed to use less water, less energy, and get more of your laundry done per load than a conventional washer!

We have been saving quite a bit with a new front load washing machine. They use a lot less water, and as long as we are making an effort to conserve we are happy. I’m sure there are other things we can improve on, but lets start small.
