A light switch cover plate is an electrician’s way to trim out electrical boxes where your light switch is mounted, and another way for you to decorate a room. A light switch cover plate will cover electrical wiring, and all mounting hardware used to mount the switch into the switch box. You don’t have to go plain white anymore when choosing light switch covers. You can choose from many different decorative switch plates, all the way to custom light switch plates.

Light switch cover plates can be made from ceramic, porcelain, Clay, plastic, stainless steel, aluminum, and there are even brass light switch covers. Once you have numbered all the materials that a switch by cover can be made from, now you have hundreds of colors, and designs to choose from as well. The cover plate switch allows you to tie in your electrical outlets and switches in with your door trim, window trim, and baseboards. If you have white wood trim in a room, you should accent the trim with the corresponding color of your wall switch plates. Therefore, if you use off-white trim your best choice would be an off white switch plate.

What about when you are having to cover over light switches on a backsplash in your kitchen or bathroom? Many large tile supplies stores, now carry a wide variety of ceramic switch plates that will match, or correspond with the color tile you’re using on your backsplash. You can find mirror switch plate covers as well, they almost seem to disappear in the mirror as they are a mirror themselves.

Another variable that comes into play when choosing the right switch plate cover for your home, is size. There are oversized light switch covers, regular or medium-sized light switch covers, and small light switch covers. Use the corresponding size depending on how large a room is, and how cramped the spaces between where a light switch is and maybe wall trim, or cabinets. Having a unique light switch cover is definitely one way to set apart one room in a home from another. Whether it is a single switch cover, or a double or even triple light switch cover, choosing the right look for your home is strictly up to you, and remember there are many more choices than just white and off-white nowadays.
