Checking Your Attic Fan Motor
The attic an be a rough place to get into especially when it already has a lot being stored away, or has low and smal confined spaces. Nonetheless, the motors on attic fans can sometimes go out, and need to be checked to see if they are working properly or if a new one needs to be purchased.
Some attic fans are connected by means of a receptacle which also is on the same circuit of other devices. This is why it is important to know the power source of the attic fan so you can either disconnect it, or eliminate the source of power for safety purposes.
The first thing you do want to make sure of is that the power source is working properly, so plug in a lamp or another device to the receptacle that the fan motor uses to make sure it comes on. If it works then on to the next step.
If the attic fan system is an all-in-one system, then it might be better to just replace the whole thing. If not then you will want to start testing with a multimeter. Then, it would be best to start by bypassing the thermostat. In most cases it just has two wires coming from it, and you can just connect both of those together. This should tell you if everything but the thermostat is good. If there is a further problem, it would be best o disconnect the fan motor, and check with a common voltage tester to make sure there was proper voltage at the leads for the fan. If there is no voltage, with the thermostat bypassed, the issue is most likely a more intricate electrical issue, in whcih case you should just purchase a new system.
